Abstract

Considering that information units and systems are information management entities, the strategic role of subject analysis and the activities of document representation may be seen as a bridge to new knowledge. From such a point of view, indexing is no more a merely technical activity, but an effective part of the managerial dimension of knowledge organisations. This paper analyses the design of subject analysis and representation policies, considering such factors as subject wideness, the universe of source documents, the desirable levels of exhaustivity and specifity, as well as the profile of the indexer and the indexing language and system. The impact of such policies on strategic questions like the definition of inner knowledge, external knowledge to be acquired, the social and confidential profile of such knowledge, and the costs of the whole cycle is analysed
