A historical information system for the miscellaneous papers collection of the University of Salamanca Historical Archive

The process of development of a historical information system designed for the Various Papers Collection of the University of Salamanca Historical Archive is presented, and its methodological and theoretical conclusions addressed. First, the informative process was established, considering information retrieval and dissemination as its final goals. Thereafter, a rigorous historical and documentary analysis of the collection was done, which resulted in its careful description by means of archival techniques and standards. Thirdly, the indexing system was built, based in the use of a thesaurus, developed specifically for this collection. An innovative methodology for the treatment of miscellaneous archival collections was created. In this process, the advantages of data base management systems, indexing languages and thesauri for archival information were demonstrated, and, in general, the decisive connections of Archival Science with Information ScienceDownloads
