Abstract

Areview of the situation of the library services in prisons is offered. First, the relevant documents of IFLA and UNESCO are examined to establish the basic programmatic frame. Thereafter, the organizational models of the United States, United Kingdom and Spain are analyzed, establishing their differences and similarities in how prison, educational and public libraries in the same district are articulated and cooperate. From this information, a theoretical model for Spain is proposed, that can be used to regulate the agreements that public libraries and prisons establish to ensure these services. These agreements set up the basic organization of the prison’s library as an information center, an education facility and a leisure space, and, therefore, determine its planning and evaluation
