Mark-up languages can be viewed as a complementary or alternative technology to conventional textual databases, but with remarkable benefits over these ones for the management of collections of large documents with complex and flexible structure and plenty of cross references, as is the case of legal texts. Experiences of processing and diffusion of legal information using HTML and XML are presented; they have been developed for several years by a working group in the Library and Information Science Department of Carlos III de Madrid University, taking the form of research and development consultancy contracts with companies, research projects with public funds and doctoral theses. These experiences have proved the increasing importance of these World Wide Web technologies for the information professionals.Downloads
