Abstract

The construction of interoperable web taxonomies by mapping the navigation menu categories of a set of websites, and their subsequent re-hierarchization, is explored. A state of the art reviewing the concept of taxonomy, and specifically the definition and role of web taxonomies is discussed: menus and site maps are conceptualized as empirical web taxonomies. A specific methodology was developed working on the 34 operating websites of the associations affiliated to the Spanish Federation of Associations of Friends of the St. James’ Way. First, the menus and site maps were analysed, their tags extracted and their order encoded. The equivalent categories were mapped by choosing the most specific label or by assigning one in case of ambiguity. The hierarchical relationships were reconstructed using an inductive approach (bottom-up). To complete the taxonomy, some generic classes were added. The final options of systematic ordering were inspired by the models of Ranganathan, Laswell, seven-questions and domain analysis. Three sets of alternative tags were created to serve as titles, menu categories or ISO 25964 descriptors, so that the hub taxonomy may support a wide range of navigation and search functions. It was possible to map all the associations’ menu categories to the hub taxonomy, which may also be used to generate a highly classified thesaurus, form the skeleton of an ontology, support the design of web architectures, and assist in the integration and aggregation of external information in web pages. The taxonomy can be also useful to create a map of the St James’ Way informational ecology, and serve as a basis for future standardization and collaborations among its agents. As a final conclusion, web taxonomies are conceptualized as a key type of knowledge organization system that must be integrated into the theory, practice and strategy of the discipline. Finally, recommendations for future research are suggested.
