A kaleidoscopic look at a brief history of the evolution of information and communication technologies; followed by conflicting aspects of the impact of these technologies on people in general, concluding with some broad suggestions regarding the potential roles of the “new” librarians and the redefined “information scientists”.

Author Biography

Alan Gilchrist, The Cura Consortium, Reino Unido

Alan Gilchrist ha dirigido su propia compañía de consultoría, últimamente conocida como el Cura Consortium, desde 1997. Su amplia experiencia como consultor en muchos aspectos de la gestión de información se ha concentrado directa o indirectamente en la organización del conocimiento para la recuperación de la información (clasificación, tesauros y taxonomías) en conjunción con el uso de software apropiado. Esta experiencia le ha conducido a comprender la gestión de metadatos y terminologías dentro del contexto más amplio de las arquitecturas de información, así como a valorar la creciente necesidad de interoperabilidad entre sistemas. Alan ha publicado ampliamente y es coautor del difundido y utilizado manual “Thesaurus Construction and Use”, actualmente en su cuarta edición. Es el editor fundador, y actualmente editor emérito, del “Journal of Information Science”. Actualmente, es miembro del comité de la Asociación Internacional de Normalización (ISO) responsable de adaptar como norma internacional la norma británica 8723, recientemente públicada, “Vocabularios estructurados para la recuperación de la Información”.
