The use of a computer system is implicit in the information retrieval process, therefore, the UNE-ISO 16175 standard agrees to develop principles and functional requirements for documents in electronic office environments and the software function. A case of study is presented to check if this standard is used, as studies show that the application of the standards enables a more efficient and effective information retrieval. In this context an empirical investigation is carried out, which studies a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context. Information from sixteen systems used for information management in a government organization was collected. Thereafter, the data was compared against the functional requirements proposed in the standard. The results show how many applications meet each requirement proposed by the standard for the software. The results show how many applications meet each requirement that is proposed by the standard, to conclude that the UNE- ISO 16175 standard is not applied in the organization studied, so it is left open to future research to check if the same happens in other organizations and why.
