Abstract

The proclamation of the Second Republic in April of 1931 brought about a change in the political, social and cultural structures in Spain, including certain milestones for women: the right to vote was approved by the Spanish Parliament on October 1, 1931, although this right would not be applied until the general elections of November 19, 1933.  This study initiates from the hypothesis that these changes were reflected in the press, and so its goal is to determine and analyze their graphic representation in relation to women, from any cultural aspect. For that reason, the general information magazine Mundo Gráfico (1911-1938), one of the most popular and widely read between 1931 and 1936, has been selected as the basis for the study. This analysis is presented together with the first results of a global project which contemplates subsequent studies in five relevant illustrated publications.
