Abstract

This article has as its main purpose to present the current state of the question related with the chal-lenges and opportunities imposed to the library sector by a changing technological environment. The analy-sis of the literature focuses on three key elements for the development of libraries today: the readers —the reason for the existence of libraries—, librarians —as mediators and facilitators of information and educa-tional processes— and technologies —which foster the development of new services and products. Li-brarians must clearly recognize their role today, so that their work remains relevant.
