The presence and impact of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Library and Information Science is analyzed, particularly in academic libraries. The results of the two related case studies are presented. The first study was aimed at identifying GIS skills and requirements by examining LIS job offers. The second consisted of an evaluation of existent GIS services in academic libraries. In both cases the methodology was based on a content study through websites. On the one hand, 109 GIS job offers between 2007 and 2014 published in http://jobs.code4lib.org were analyzed, in particular the type of required qualifications, professional profiles, experience and main skills. On the other hand, the academic libraries of the top 50 universities of the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2013), researching the existence of a GIS service related to the academic library, the degree of implication of the library in it and the kind of assistance and material offered. Both studies gave intermingled results, in relation to the employer’s demands and the characteristics of the GIS services in academic libraries. The results help to emphasize the importance of GIS for the Library and Information Science profession, as well as the librarian role in their current development.Downloads
