The aim of this study is to discuss how different interpretations of a photograph interfere at the moment of indexing. To achieve this objective, this research used the Reading Model for Indexing Photographs based on the Complex Method and the Primary Functions of the Image proposed by Silva and Dias (2018). This model was applied in an activity to represent a photograph selected as a sample. The model was applied by students of the Librarianship course at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. As a result, it was identified that understanding the context in which the photograph was produced and used interfered in the selection of keywords during the indexing process and that textual information enhances the thematic access to images.
