Comparative evaluation of the use of indexing language in catalogs of university libraries for subject retrieval

Abstract

A comparative evaluation was made of the use of natural language versus two specialized indexing languages, aiming to demonstrate the influence of the availability of indexing languages on the functioning of information retrieval systems. The study was conducted within the ambit of the construction of search strategies by subject in online university library catalogs. The precision ratio was calculated to determine the accuracy of each indexing language in subjectbased information retrieval. From the comparative evaluation of the use of indexing languages, it was concluded that the term specificity required by the user during retrieval was more satisfactory when the query was made through controlled languages, whose availability and simplicity is also an indispensable requisite.

Profesora Adjunta del Departamento de Ciencia de la Información de la Universidade Federal de São Carlos - UFSCar, São Carlos, SP, Brasil, realizando actividades de docencia en el pré grado en las disciplinas de Indización y Lenguajes documentales alfabéticas y jerárquicas. Doctora en Ciencia de la Información por Programa de Post grado en Ciencia de la Información de la Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, campo de Marilia, SP, Brasil, con una producción científica desarrollada en el área de Organización de la Información, Lenguajes documentales alfabéticas, Redes y Servicios de Información. Ella es coordinadora de las actividades de investigación del Grupo de Investigación “Organización del Conocimiento para Diseminación de la Información e miembro del Grupo de Investigación “Analisis Documental” coordinado por Prof. Dr. João Batista Ernesto de Moraes.

Profesora Titular del Departamento de Ciência de la Información de la UNESP – Campus de Marilia; actualmente realizando actividades de docencia em el pré grado com los cursos de Indexación, y Resúmenes de Lenguajes Documentales Alfabéticas; y dando clases em el post grado, dentro de la línea de investigación de Organización de la Información, adjunto al Programa de Ciencia de la Información de la “Organização da Informação” do Programa em Ciência da Informação da UNESP; también ejerciendo actividades de investigación dentro Del Grupo de Investigación “Análisis Documental”.Obtuvo beca de investigación otorgada por el CNPq en 1993 hasta hoy. Publicó diversos artículos. Autora del libro “PRECIS en la lengua portuguesa: teoria y práctica de la indexación”. Actuó, profesionalmente, como Coordenadora de la Cordinación General de Bibliotecas de la UNESP, de Abril de 1999 hasta Enero de 2005. Como consecuencia fué nombrada Miembro del Comité Generador del Consorcio de Biblioteca Electrónica y del Concejo de Rectores de las Universidades Estatales Paulistas (CRUESP). Master y Doctora en Ciencia de la Comunicación por la Escuela de Comunicaciones y Artes de la USP.Actualmente, Libre Docente en Análisis Documental y Lenguajes Documentales Alfabéticos por la Facultad de Filosofía y Ciencias de la UNESP – Campus de Marilia. Participa de Comités Científicos de revistas científicas de Ciencia de la Información en el Brasil.
